What is ESOL?

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is a program of English instruction to promote English language proficiency (LEP). ESOL instruction must integrate instructional techniques of teaching English as a second language (ESL) with the curriculum requirements of English Language Arts. The curriculum is equal in amount, scope, and sequence as the curriculum provided to regular education students. The students assigned to these classrooms may speak a variety of primary languages other than English and are at different levels of English language proficiency.

What is ELL?

ELLs (English Language Learners) refers to the students who are enrolled in ESL/ESOL classes because they are developing their English language skills.

Who Is Eligible For ESOL?

Students whose first language is not English and who are not yet proficient in English are eligible for ESOL.  This may include students who were born in the United States due to the fact that their families speak another language at home.
